Building a Brand with a Blog | How Blogs help Build Brands

By Herman Mehling | July 18, 2007

When most companies start building a brand online, they automatically do the obvious – they create online banner ads, pop-ups or search engine ads.

Very few create a blog. Indeed, most companies don’t even associate a blog with brand creation. They’re making a big and costly mistake. But maybe they see more value in pumping lots of dollars into ads that most people hate, don’t read, and don’t trust!

Data from Forrester Research shows that only 6 percent of US Internet visitors trust search engine ads and only 2 percent trust online banner ads. How do you build a brand if few people believe the ads?

Do Corporate Blogs Pay Off?

By Herman Mehling | July 15, 2007

Many companies are turning to blogs — corporate blogs and CEO blogs — as affordable and effective ways to communicate 24/7 with different audiences: employees, customers, consumers, company critics and the press.

Data from London, England-based researcher Melcrum suggest that 55 percent of professional communicators use or plan to use blogs in the next year. Melcrum based its finding on responses from more than 2,000 people working in internal and corporate communications in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.

Linkbait Techniques, Strategies to Reel in SEO Rankings

By Geoff Simon | July 13, 2007

One of the fastest-growing social media tactics is linkbait, content that draws audiences to a Web site through blogs, news sites and social media portals.

Linkbait is anything that sparks discussion or controversy or is otherwise attractive to readers and is easily linked to or shared. It is designed to be read on popular online forums like Digg, Fark, Reddit and others—depending on the topic.

Linkbait content is first submitted to prominent social media sites and blog sites, and if it proves popular, it will find its way to smaller forums and gradually (or quickly) spread across the Web. The content should remain popular due to residual traffic, and that will give it a high rating among search engines.

Independence Day, Net Neutrality, the FTC and Fireworks

By Geoff Simon | July 4, 2007

Most of us celebrate independence day by watching fireworks, barbeque’s on the beach, concerts in the park and spending time with friends and family. Of coarse everyone has their own feelings when it comes to this day and what it means to them.

We all know that in 1776 Thomas Jefferson offered his declaration offering all individuals the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This historic document inspired a nation that is established on these inalienable rights and in 1941 Congress announced this date as an official holiday. I can go on more about the meaning of this to our great nation, but what does this have to do with the Internet?

New Feature: Snap Shots | Features & Disabling

By Geoff Simon | July 4, 2007

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you “look ahead,” before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot Preview Pane when it pops up and opt-out.

Are Media Giants Threatened By Web 2.0?

By Geoff Simon | July 2, 2007

Two years ago, after YouTube had taken the Internet by storm, InterActiveCorp CEO Barry Diller scoffed at the idea that an amateur video-sharing site could threaten the entertainment industry.

“People with talent and expertise at making entertainment products are not going to be displaced by 1,800 people coming up with their videos that they think are going to have an appeal,” Diller said during a Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco in October 2005.

Well, if that’s the case, why is Viacom suing YouTube and why are NBC and News Corp. scrambling to find a foothold into the rapidly growing online video market?

A Good Drink | Mixing Old & New Media

By Geoff Simon | June 27, 2007

While successful marketing certainly has some new edgy and exciting adjectives attached to it these days—“viral,” “guerilla,” “mobile”—the good ol’ adage, “Don’t forget from where you’ve come” means a lot here. Mixing it up when it comes to a powerful present-day marketing campaign means covering all ground, and looking behind you before stepping forward.

While companies like Microsoft shifting the majority of their advertising budget over to digital within the next few years, TV, print, and other traditional media will still play a prominent role in their marketing campaigns. However, there will be a few extra seats around the table even in planning that direct-mailing, as the digital marketing team will be involved in all marketing decisions. Why? Because Microsoft knows the future of marketing—the importance of a well-linked campaign that better engages and targets their audience.
